Apple, HBO in bidding war for new JJ Abrams sci-fi drama series

Let the battle for the domination of your TV screens begin.

Every major player it seems is lining up to get involved in the Streaming Wars. Rumours about Apple might even buy Netflix, ramping up the competition with Amazon.

However, we are truly blessed, because it seems the Streaming Wars are set to heavily involve sci-fi. The practical upshot of which, is that we could have more quality sci-fi on our screens than ever before.

Netflix is all set to blow our minds with Altered Carbon in just two-and-a-half weeks and Apple announced only recently that it was buying a new sci-fi drama from the mighty mind of Ronald D. Moore, which imagines a world in which the space race never ended, according to Deadline.

Now Apple has got into a bidding war with HBO – not a streaming service, but a pay-for-view channel nonetheless – in an attempt to get J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sci-fi drama series, to be called Demimonde, according to TV Line.

Details about the series are scarce at this point in time, but it will basically be a show about the world’s battle against an oppressive force. The Hollywood Reporter writes,

“[It’s about] a family – consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter – who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up transporting to another land amid a world’s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world.”

If and when the show is picked up, it would be the first TV show Abrams will have has created and written since Fringe. Cleary Mr Abrams and Bad Robot are keeping very busy, with the imminent release of Cloverfied 3 and his helming of Star Wars Episode IX.

The Merrian-Webster dictionary defines “Demimonde” as “a class of women on the fringes of respectable society supported by wealthy lovers” or “a distinct circle or world that is often an isolated part of a larger world”. From the description, Abrams is most likely going with that second meaning.

Assuming Apple is successful in their bid, especially considering the vast amount of resources at their disposal, it’s unclear when the show will be debuting, and whether or not it will be part of Apple Music or if it could be folded into Apple TV.

Lest we forget though, HBO has given us epics like Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Westworld, plus it’s forthcoming Fahrenheit 451 adaptation and the Watchmen pilotLet’s just hope bidding doesn’t get ridiculous leaving less money to actually make a good series.
