Tarantino’s Star Trek will be R-Rated and Mark L Smith is favourite to write script

So, what feels like about five minutes ago, we reported on the incredible story about Quentin Tarantino developing – and possibly directing – a Star Trek movie…and the internet went bananas. Quite rightly so.

According to Deadline, the story is developing at a rate of knots. Tarantino apparently met for hours in a writers room with Mark L Smith, Lindsey Beer and Drew Pearce.

Smith is best known for writing the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed The Revenant and subsequently overhauled Overlord, the WWII thriller that Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing for Paramount. Pearce’s script credits include Iron Man 3 (2013), Sherlock Holmes 3, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) and the TV series Runaway TV. Beer’s credits are mostly upcoming and include the Doug Liman-directed Chaos Walking, as well as Godzilla Vs. Kong, Masters of the Universe, Barbarella and Dungeons and Dragons…so all pretty big stuff.

They kicked around ideas and one of them will get the job. Deadline says that apparently the frontrunner is Smith. Although, Pearce has the most relevant credentials in our opinion.

The film will most seemingly go where no Star Trek has gone before: Tarantino has required it to be R rated – and more importantly – Paramount and Abrams agreed to that condition. Most mega budget tent poles restrict the film to a PG-13 rating in an effort to maximize the audience.

Of course the exception to this rule was Fox’s Deadpool (2016), but that film started out with modest ambitions before it caught on and became the biggest R rated film ever. Naturally, now everyone has suddenly woken up to the idea that not everyone wants fluffy, puff pieces…and half of today’s cinema goers want something with some teeth. Take Logan (2017) for example.

That rating was crucial to Tarantino, who – again, according to Deadline – hopes to direct this Star Trek and who has helmed R rated films his entire career. Just imagine the potential for the Star Trek universe…

They will lock one of the three quickly (if there is a front runner, it might be Smith) and the film will be scripted based on Tarantino’s idea while he himself is filming his next movie about the Manson summer of 1969, which got set at Sony and has Margot Robbie poised to play Sharon Tate, and Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt all having met with the filmmaker about roles.

It goes without saying however that this project is still very much at the talk phase and Tarantino is no stranger to film ideas that don’t come together. So while this is the second most amazing news story you could have wished for this morning, it’s still a very long way off.

No word on how this would affect the planned fourth installment in Paramount’s ongoing Star Trek film franchise, which was set to bring back Chris Hemsworth as Captain Kirk’s father. There’s also no word on who the writers are that Abrams has assembled.

Would we get to see subtle inclusions from the Tarantino-verse? Captain Vega perhaps? The USS Alabama? Would the whole cast return? Would we have to have Simon Pegg?

Clearly, this is a developing story that we’re very excited about. So stay tuned to MyM for more details.
