The vastly under-rated Sicario was a modest hit at best, taking $84 million worldwide against a $30 million budget. If you haven’t seen it yet, go and watch it, right now. Stop reading this story and just go and watch it. If you didn’t already know, it’s directed by Denis Villeneuve, the man who gave us the amazing Blade Runner sequel this year.

Despite it’s average earnings, talk of a sequel started during the film’s theatrical run and now that talk has turned into reality. The follow-up, which will be titled Soldado, is on the way, and once again stars Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro.

The first installment in the series was titled “Sicario”, a Spanish word that is translated into “hitman” in English. “Soldado” in English, means soldier. And the series itself is meant to be a trilogy.

Emily Blunt is not returning and sadly Villeneuve is busy working on the new Dune movie. The new director is Stefano Sollima, best known for creating and directing the Italian TV series Gomorra. Taylor Sheridan, who penned Sicario, is writing the sequel, which will focus on Del Toro’s shadowy assassin character.

Soldado is expected to hit theatres on June 29, 2018.
