Quentin Tarantino is developing and might direct a Star Trek movie

Yeah, you read that right. And no, it’s not April 1st.

Deadline reports that the man behind Reservoir DogsPulp Fiction and Kill Bill has come up with a story idea to take Star Trek in a new direction with Paramount Pictures.

Apparently, Tarantino shared an idea for a new Trek film with producer JJ Abrams, who took the idea to Paramount and the plan is to assemble a writers room that will put together a movie based on Tarantino’s concept. If everything goes well, Tarantino might direct, with Abrams producing.

Wow.

So, that’s the big news, let it sink in for a second.

One of the world’s best film directors taking on the world’s best sci-fi franchise. It would be a totally new direction for Tarantino and it would mark the first time he’s taken on a major franchise and also a science fiction project. But, his fondness of Trek is well known and arguably his best movie – Jackie Brown – was based on the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard, so he’s more than capable of interpreting source material that isn’t his own. Moreover, Tarantino has demonstrated on a number of occasions that he commits himself to a specific genre and aims to create a tribute, acknowledging every element that’s unique to that style and paying respect to it and the fanbase. He sets out to get the tone absolutely right and he has succeeded.

Tarantino is currently hard at work on an as-yet untitled 1969 movie, which Sony Pictures just picked up after a particularly aggressive round of studio courtship. The untitled film is an ensemble that deals with a period in Los Angeles around the time of the Manson murder spree around 1969. He’s asked Margot Robbie to play Sharon Tate and has been discussing two male lead roles with Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, though he hasn’t yet set final casting.

That has a release date of August 9, 2019, so there’s no doubt that’s next for him. That leaves almost two years to put together a script that could woo Tarantino into uncharted space.

If he were to helm a Star Trek film next, it would make it his 10th film and he has repeatedly said that he intends to retire after making 10 movies. However, it would certainly be a nice surprise if Tarantino decided to close out his career with a big blockbuster bang.

It goes without saying however that this project is still very much at the talk phase and Tarantino is no stranger to film ideas that don’t come together. In fact, he had a number of films reportedly in the works, including a 1930s Australian crime film, before his 1969 film became his next project. So while this is the second most amazing news story you could have wished for this morning, it’s still a very long way off.

No word on how this would affect the planned fourth installment in Paramount’s ongoing Star Trek film franchise, which was set to bring back Chris Hemsworth as Captain Kirk’s father. There’s also no word on who the writers are that Abrams has assembled.

Would we get to see subtle inclusions from the Tarantino-verse? Captain Vega perhaps? The USS Alabama? Would the whole cast return? Would we have to have Simon Pegg?

Birth Movies Death uncovered this piece of audio from a 2015 Nerdist podcast in which Tarantino actually talks about some ideas for a Star Trek movie. Whether or not this includes any of his pitch to Abrams, we don’t know, but hey, it’s Tarantino gushing about Star Trek.
