Chances are you’ve heard the story of Faust, the chap who sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for all manner of worldly delights. The classic German legend gets another retelling in Kore Yamazaki’s new manga …but this time, the titular doctor Faust’s a woman.

This debut volume opens with the bespectacled Johanna Faust helping a lad named Marion, who has stolen some books that used to belong to his bankrupt father. Recognising his desire for knowledge, Faust promises to teach the young Marion, but in exchange he has to open the door of a nearby church on the night of the new moon; something Johanna is unable to do for herself.

Sealed away in the bowels of that church is the disembodied arm of Mephistopheles, the demon whom Faust made her famous bargain with. However, as she goes to retrieve the body part, Faust is stabbed in the chest by an inquisitor named Lorenzo. Being immortal thanks to her infernal pact, Johanna survives to skedaddle with the magic limb, and Marion decides to travel with her to locate the remainder of Mephistopheles’ body.

While there are only three chapters in this first volume (plus a one-off standalone story as an extra), Frau Faust’s certainly a fun read. The characters prove to be the main draw, with Faust herself topping the bill alongside her homunculus daughter, Nico. Reviewed by Ian Wolf
