Altered Carbon, another tantalizing teaser

Just a few days ago, we were given a slither of photos and an almost Weyland-Yutoni-meets-Westworld style commercial for Psychasec, the company that can enable you to “live forever, in the body you deserve”.

Then, after that, we got another teaser, which was a barrage of short, sharp snippets giving us an idea of the scale of this sci-fi production…and now we have another, longer teaser, which gives us the best idea yet of what’s in store.

“I was born on Earth…” the narration starts. “I was the richest man on several planets by the age of 74…” he continues. “The first time I died, I was 99. New technology transferred my consciousness to a new body. For 263 years I ‘sleeved’ into new bodies…living on imperfect health. But last night, at the age of 365…I died again. Today, I hired someone to solve my murder.”

Altered Carbon is based on Richard K. Morgan’s cyberpunk noir novel and set some 300 years in the future. The 10-part series takes place in a dystopian world where human consciousnesses is digitized and stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine, allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness “re-sleeved” into new bodies.

Joel Kinnaman (Robocop) looks totally at ease in this dystopian, Blade Runner-esque future and kicks some ass at the same time.

The story follows specially trained “Envoy” soldier Takeshi Kovacs – played by both Will Yun Lee (The Wolverine) and Kinnaman – who is downloaded from an off-world prison and into the body of a disgraced cop at the behest of Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), a highly influential aristocrat. Bancroft was killed and the last automatic backup of his stack was made hours before his death, leaving him with no memory of who killed him and why. While police ruled it a suicide, Bancroft is convinced he was murdered and wants Kovacs to find out the truth.

Altered Carbon launches on Netflix on Friday, 2 February 2018.
