Airing in the UK on Sky 1, new episodes every Monday
Writers:
Caitlin Parrish and Jessica Kardos
Director: Rob Greenlea

Essential Plot Points:

  • Alex and Maggie called it quits last week, and as Alex isn’t the best place Kara decides to take her home for a night. Both to help her clear her head but also to remind her of what’s important.
  • The episode then sends us into a flashback, showing us how Kara and Alex first accepted each other and became a crime-fighting duo.
  • Alex and Kara try to one-up each other all the time but Alex also tried to look out for her adopted sister when people pick on her. Kara doesn’t get on with many people at her school, just Kenny the wallflower who somehow knows everyone’s secrets.
  • When Kenny turns up dead one day it’s up to Kara and Alex to find out who did it, and the investigation turns up a lot more than they would have expected.

    Review:

Kara and Alex haven’t always been close, which is surprising given how inseparable they are now. But, in this week’s episode, it’s all about their teenage years and how the pair went from being at odds with each other to becoming the world’s best crime-fighting duo. In this self-contained episode we get to know some more about the series’ best characters and it makes for a compelling if familiar new chapter for them.

  • The episode has the feel of the early days in Smallville, when the teenage Clarke Kent with budding powers took on the world of High School while keeping his abilities a secret. One character even makes an appearance in this week’s Supergirl,as Chloe Sullivan uses her great tech-skills to help Alex and Kara decrypt Kenny’s laptop. Olivia Nikkanen and Izabela Vidovic do well here as the younger-versions of Alex and Kara, almost completely embodying their adult-counterparts as well as making them compelling enough to keep the episode from being a complete write-off

  • “Midvale” does stray into predictable territory once in a while, especially when the Danvers’ investigation really starts to take shape. The culprit couldn’t be more obvious if he had a big neon sign on his head saying ‘It was me’, and the things that the pair uncover during their search for the truth is very typical of any American high school drama so it just seems like the writers were playing plot bingo. Alex and Kara were both great in their Nancy Drew roles, though, and it was definitely nice to see how their friendship started to bloom.

The problem is that this episode is just filler, and it has completely halted the great momentum that the series was building up until this point. It hasn’t introduced anything that we weren’t already aware of when it came to Kara and Alex, and the way the flashback dominated the episode seemed to just make their present-day trip back home seem a bit pointless. It looked like they were there for only one night, and it didn’t seem worth it for one soap-opera style flashback storyline. It’s also sad that it only took one night’s sleep for Alex to get over Maggie, it’s not clear if she is completely fine with things but we feel it would make more sense for Alex to be upset about this for longer. Their relationship was one of the best things about the show, so it would be upsetting if it was just written off within one episode.

The Good:

Olivia Nikkanen and Izabela Vidovic were perfectly cast as Alex and Kara, they really took on the characters and made them their own. We’d definitely love to see them again one day.

  • The Bad:

  • The episode was mainly filler that didn’t add much to the storyline, or do much to change Alex and Kara as characters.
  • Not only that, but the high school drama played off in a very predictable way and if it wasn’t for the great performances from its young leads then this would have been a very dull episode.

And the Random:

    • Oh My God. They killed Kenny! One of the football players said in this week’s episode and we couldn’t help but think of South Park the whole time.
