Star Trek: Discovery stars respond to those rumours

We’ve already heard what Star Trek: Discovery producer Aaron Herberts had to say regarding whether the second season of Discovery would reconcile with older fans of the series by fixing issues with continuity.

“We have ten years until the original series comes into play. It is a challenge creatively because we have lots of choices in terms of how do we reconcile this [spore] drive? This surrogate daughter of Sarek? How do we reconcile these things the closer we get to the original series? That’s going to be a big discussion that we have in season two.”

Is there going to be some sort of magic reset button? A temporal cold war perhaps, or more than likely a parallel timeline…maybe not the Mirror Universe, but probably a mirror universe.

We’ve also offered our solution: we think the whole of Star Trek: Discovery should be the dream of Captain Ed Mercer from The Orville. We want to see Seth MacFarlane stepping out of a steamy shower mumbling something about a crazy dream he had last night.

Regardless, the reconciliation process and all this talk of the original series will inevitably raise the question – will there be any cameos of veteran actors in the new series? Captain Kirk (William Shatner) would be an obvious candidate for such a cameo, but not everyone is convinced that this is a good idea. Thank God.

And Jason Isaacs is one of them. Speaking to the UK press he said…

“Someone asked which cast members from the existing series would you like to guest star. I think people watch good drama shows and they completely suspend their disbelief, they feel like they’re looking through the keyhole at another world, if you do it well enough. ‘If you have stunt celebrity cameo casting, it completely pulls them out of it. They feel like they’re watching a Saturday Night Live sketch.”

He’s not wrong. And speaking of Jason Isaacs, he had some interesting things to say when he was talking to Games Radar.

“I love all the theories, are you kidding?! I love all that. We all love them. I mean, there’s a lot of really bonkers stiff out there. There are some people who might have some bits right…no one has got the whole thing right. There’s stuff about me as well. Many people that think I’m Klingon or Romulan and a whole bunch of other stuff. There’s a lot of stuff about why I want Michael to be serving on the ship or why I want Ash Tyler to be serving on the ship and…more power to them! People should continue to come up with these theories. Some people will feel smug at the end of it and some people will feel really stupid at the end of it.”

Unlike Isaacs, who was clearly enjoying the interview and chatting away quite happily, being al very bubbly, Shazad Latif, meanwhile, was much more reserved, even deflective. In short, he basically clammed up and starts grinning.

“I’ve heard lots of theories, I don’t really read them, my publicist was telling me about this mad, mad stuff. I was saying to Jsaon Isaacs, this is what Star Trek fandom is, there’s forums and discussions all the time and some of them they get right and some of them they get wrong. Some of them are wild…but we’re just happy that they’re interested in the show we’re making, which is just great. I say keep watching it, I like mystery, I don’t want to analyze something before it’s…yeah, I find that very strange, yeah.”

When asked specifically about the Voq theory, he replied, “Let’s just watch the show, keep it a mystery…yeah…” he trails off.

Star Trek: Discovery returns to US screens on Sunday, January 7, 2018 on CBS All Access at 8:30 pm ET and on Monday, January 8th in the UK on Netflix
