Largely unknown in the UK, the epic US series Mystery Science Theater 3000 has been renewed for a second season on Netflix.

This will be the 12th in total, as there were 10 seasons before Netflix rebooted it. If you’re not already aware of it, the premise is pretty simple.

Set in the not-too-distant future, a Gizmonic Institute employee (Jonah Ray) is lured to the dark side of the moon by third-generation mad scientist Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) and her flunky, Max. He is sat in front of cheesy movies and forced to tortuously watch terrible movies in their entirety as these mad scientists study the effects on his mind. He’s accompanied by two robots, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot and together they watch the movies – as do we – but Jonah and his two mechanical mates add their own hilarious commentary, basically ripping these bad B-movies to shreds.

*Ahem* “Guten Tag! Zigaretten? Wir wollen ein Auto mieten!”

If you’ve never seen an episode, we suggest you start with the only standalone Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie that’s been made, where they watch – and make an endless stream of side-splittingly funny remarks to – This Island Earth, the 1955 epic sub-standard sci-fi flick. Watch that – and we guarantee you’ll love it…then get into the series. And then you’ll understand how happy the rest of us are.

Series creator Joel Hodgson and Shout! Factory launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the show back in November 2015. The campaign raised more than $6.3 million, breaking a Kickstarter record previously held by the Veronica Mars movie. The money raised allowed them to produce 14 new episodes for the show’s eleventh season, including a Christmas special.

A brief announcement video, featuring Hodgson, Ray and Day hit YouTube shortly after the traditional Thanksgiving MST3K marathon on Thursday.
