Jude Law is concluding negotiations to play the male lead opposite Brie Larson in Marvel’s Captain Marvel, sources have told Variety.

Ben Mendelsohn is on board to play the villain with Half Nelson helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directing. Marvel veteran Kevin Feige is producing.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet wrote the most recent script with Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) penning previous drafts. It will follow Carol Danvers (Larson), an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight.

Throughout Marvel Comic history, there have been eight different Captain Marvels. This movie will feature three Captain Marvels: Carol Danvers (Miss Marvel), Mar-Vell (a Kree alien and superhero) and Khn’nr (a Skrull alien and superhero). Law will be playing Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers.

The character debuted during the Silver Age of comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 and has made many appearances since then, including a self-titled series and the second volume of the Marvel Spotlight series.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Feige announced that the superhero film will be set in the ’90s, before the events of Iron Man (2008) and long before Avengers ever entertained the idea of assembling. Samuel L. Jackson is set to reprise his role as Nick Fury, before he lost an eye. It will serve as a prequel tale to how that actually happened and how he came to monitor alien activity. This will be the second prequel of the MCU, the first was Captain America (2011).

This film is based on the “Secret Invasion” storyline, where the shape-shifting aliens the Skrulls launched a takeover of Earth and it will be the first live-action appearance of the Skrulls – the enemies of the Kree race (last seen in Guardians of the Galaxy). The Skrulls are also owned by 20th Century Fox, as they are rivals of the Fantastic Four heroes; however, Fox does have the rights to Super-Skrull, a Fantastic Four villain who could wield all their powers and had homaged him in Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

The movie is expected to land on March 8, 2019.
