The yearly Doki Doki Festival opened its doors again in November and brought its exhilarating mix of exhibition, music, martial arts, maid café and merch (So. Much. Merch!) to Manchester.

The one-day event, which took over Sugden Sports Centre, is tied together by a laidback, community feel, and features enough Japanese outfits and other cool cosplay to fill a coffee table book.

On-stage events included musical interludes from the taiko-playing Thunderdrummers, martial arts displays from three different dojos, practical cosplay tutorials, author Andrew Osmond on Ghost in the Shell and a Japanese fashion show.

The upstairs cinema showed anime such as The Garden of Words and A Letter To Momo, a dedicated gaming area allowed entrants to play retro titles and learn classic Japanese board games such as Go, while the day ended with the cosplay championships and an open masquerade.

Doki Doki will return on Saturday 10 November 2018.

MyM magazine speaks exclusively to Doki Doki organiser Andrew Gaskell in Issue 69, on sale 9 December 2017, to find out how the festival first got started, how it has evolved since its early days and where the show is heading in the future.
