Even at 20 years old, Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers is still better than many sci-fi movies that have come and gone in that time, with its blend of practical and digital effects and its extremely tongue-in-cheek political commentary.

Most movies these days rely on computer generated special effects and while some carry them off well – Oblivion, Gravity even Avatar – there’s something special about watching practical effects being created.

To celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. dived deep into their archives and dug out a five-minute video of their team creating a life-size, functional Warrior Bug from the movie. According to them, this footage has never been seen…and it’s pretty cool.

Without a doubt, it’s a work of genius, from its “skin” aesthetic to the mechanics inside and you’ll notice that this video is listed as “Part One” so hopefully they’ll be putting more up before too long.

A rummage around YouTube will give you a few other Starship Troopers 20th anniversary-associated videos…like this one by film editor Tim Gonzales. He explains that it’s a fan edit where he’s looked past the satire and irony and re-cut it as if it were a more serious movie.

Finally, while we’re on the subject, there’s no more news on the reboot. You may remember that about this time last year, we reported that writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, who penned the Baywatch movie (oh dear) and the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot, had been hired by producer Neal H. Moritz to write a new adaptation of the original Robert A. Heinlein novel. So, it wasn’t going to be a remake of the 1997 Paul Verhoeven film, just as say, Denis Villeneuve’s new Dune isn’t a remake of David Lynch’s under-rated 1984 epic. It was to be a new interpretation. But, no more news on this has surfaced, so yes, we would like to know more.
