It’s been, on average, a very good year for Stephen King adaptations. Yes, The Dark Tower went wide of the mark and The Mist didn’t make it past season 1 but there have been some real success stories too. Mr Mercedes is getting nothing but good word and It is on course to be the highest grossing horror movie EVER.

A flotilla of new King adaptations is on the way and the latest of these is The Talisman, based on the book King co-wrote with fellow horror mega star Peter Straub. The adaptation is set to be penned by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) who is also a strong contender to direct.

The novel, published in 1984 follows Jack, a twelve year old boy intent on saving his dying mother by finding a mysterious crystal called The Talisman. His journey takes him to a parallel dimension where he discovers everyone has a ‘twinner’, or someone on the other side of the dimensional wall whose life mirrors their own.

The book was massively successful and cleverly plays with recurrent locations and ideas from numerous other King novels. One character is a gunslinger like Roland Deschain, one location also features in The Tommyknockers and there are lots more subtle pieces of connective tissue. A sequel, Black House, followed in 2001 and a third book is apparently in the planning stages. They’re big, expansive stories with a very personal dimension and, in many ways, could be a better entry ramp to King’s multiverse than The Dark Tower series. There’s lots of potential here and we’ll be keeping our eyes on this one.

Thanks to Variety for the story.
