Ron Howard reveals the Han Solo movie title

Famed director and all-round Hollywood golden boy Richie Cunningham Ron Howard has announced the name of the new Han Solo origins movie by Twitter, ’cause he does that sort of thing.

Howard took over the project back in June when previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), who had worked on it for six months, left following disagreements with Disney. Since then, Howard has been working almost non-stop, with extensive reshoots that have likely changed the film considerably from its original version as he shows regularly on his social media accounts. The film was written by Lawrence Kasdan, who worked on the first trilogy with Lucas, along with his son Jon Kasdan.

All the while, though, he was referring to the film as the “Untitled Han Solo movie.” Well, today, with principle photography now apparently finished, he revealed the real title: Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Since it’s so obvious, it just raises questions of why it took so long to reveal. It’s also known that Lucasfilm is sticking with the “A Star Wars Story” subtitle that started on Rogue One.

Han Solo will be played by Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures) and Donald Glover (Atlanta, The Martian) will be Lando Calrissian. Thandie Newton (Westworld) has an unknown role and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) plays Kira, who is one of the adventurers Han will meet. Joonas Suotamo will play Chewie, as he did in The Force Awakens. Paul Bettany also has a role, as does Clint Howard and Warwick Davis.

Of course, end of principal photography doesn’t mean the end of production as a whole. There’s still much visual effects work to do and something tells us Howard’s nowhere near done with tweeting about this.

The original team (L-R) Miller, Harrelson, Waller-Bridge, Ehrenreich, Clarke, Suotamo, Lord and Glover

Despite the delays in production, Solo is still scheduled to be released May 25, 2018. Which means we’re likely to see a first trailer by the end of the year.

Suitably unimpressed, fans have already begun offering their suggestions for a title.

Some have suggested riffing on Indiana Jones and going full pulp: Han Solo and the Spice Mines of Kessel/ …and the Scum of Villainy/ …and the Unnecessary Origin Story That’s a Cash Grab.

Others weren’t so kind…

It’s a befitting title. The first spin-off Rogue one made just over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Let’s see what this one can do. Ron Howard directed it so it’s going to be good of course.
