Revival Of Classic ’90s Show Roswell In The Works

Roswell was one of those shows that was ever so slightly before its time. Based on the Roswell High novels by Melinda Metz it followed a group of teen aliens hiding out in plain sight in the world’s most famous UFO crash site. The show only lasted from 1999 to 2002 but it set the tone for a lot of what would follow especially shows like The 100 and The Vampire Diaries.  It was GREAT too, not just because of the snappy dialogue and premise but because of how well it mapped that premise onto the horrors of adolescence. Buffy was the show that got the attention, and deservedly so, but both it and Roswell did perceptive, honest and necessary work about growing up.

Also the theme tune was fantastic.

Now, we are genuinely delighted to report, Roswell is on the way back. Carina McKenzie, producer of The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals, has written the script and we suspect will serve as show runner should it get picked up. And based on what we’re reading, it definitely should be.

Here’s the logline:

“After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: He’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.”

We will watch as much of that as we can now thank you please. The idea of mapping the alien experience onto the immigrant experience is as timely as it is charged and the show has massive potential to engage with the issues of the day. While, at the same time being a science fiction conspiracy series where gorgeous people angst about whether or not they can be together.

That sounds about as perfect as we could possibly hope for, and, honestly, we need this show right now. No word yet on a pick up, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed. Thanks to Variety for the story and to play us out, here’s Dido.
