As reported by Anime News Network, Total Licensing notes that a TV series based on the Professor Layton games is in development.

Developed by Level-5, there are seven main games in the series, where the professor and his apprentice Luke solve mysteries and puzzles. The latest, Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, launched in the summer for iOS and Android devices and is released on Nintendo 3DS on 6 October. There has also been a crossover title with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Now comes the news that Level-5 and subsidiary company Level-5 abby are working on bringing a 26-episode animated series to screens. At this time it is now known if it will be based on a particular game in the series or if it will be a wholly original story, but it is set to air in 2018.

The franchise has already seen Professor Layton make it into a trio of novels and a manga (Professor Layton and the Cheerful Mystery), which was released in Japan. There was also the anime film Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, which was released in Japan in 2009, and in the UK the following year.
