Hope we didn’t scare you too much! But there’s a distinctly spooky feel to this issue of MyM that lets us know Halloween must be just around the corner. Anime fans get a double-hit of horrific shows to watch, as we first highlight the best – or should that be worst? – content on streaming sites (see page 47), before digging even deeper into the creatures that drive Japan’s obsession with death and gore (page 60).

It might not surprise you to learn that Sean Bean has come over a bit dead, given the rate his characters bite the dust. But season two of The Frankenstein Chronicles (page 20) appears to have solved that issue by stitching the unlucky fella back together. Still, our trip to Belfast to visit the set and meet the cast and crew of this ITV Encore drama was enough to give our reporter a good scare. Although it’s certainly not the only TV show to feature shocks, as our countdown of the best anthology shows (page 32) reveals.

Fans of creature features will already be well aware of the work of Guillermo del Toro (page 68), thanks to chilling tales such as Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone. We dig into what makes this arch geek such a great storyteller in our extensive guide to his work, ahead of his next monster flick The Shape Of Water.

And if you didn’t think it took bravery to bring you each issue of MyM, pity the poor reporter who had to interview the man mountain known for playing serial killers Jason Voorhees and Victor Crowley (page 82). We’ve sent the pieces of him that were returned to us back to his family with a note saying, “Sorry!” Who’d be a journalist, eh?
