To quote Hudson in Aliens, “Waaa-hooooooooooo!”
Considering how much negative press was flying around in the months leading up to the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery – Fuller’s departure, Meyer’s departure, cost overruns, etc, etc – this turned out pretty damn good. You’ve read the full review of Star Trek: Discovery‘s first two episodes, so now here’s a breakdown of Netflix’s trailer showing what we can look forward to in the rest of season one…
We see Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) on some of prison transport looking pretty glum after her sentencing in episode two. The other prisoners relish in her being there. We get glimpses back of the massacre that took place at the Binary Stars and the death of captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). No wonder Burnham is looking bummed. One prisoner says in an exasperated voice, “8,000 dead in the first two days of war.” Burnham corrects her, “8,168.”
She looks over her shoulder as the shuttle enters what appears to be the landing bay of a starship, probably not what she was expecting. The camera pans out and we see it’s the USS Discovery. Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) introduces himself. Still in her prison uniform, Burnham asks what she’s doing onboard, to which Lorca replies, “I have something on deck that requires every trained mind available.”
We see a short montage of weird stuff; Burnham in a sealed chamber with some strange, Stargate-like fireflies, then some floating crystals that seem to melt into the table…very peculiar. Burnham herself asks, “What the hell is going on on this ship?”
Next, we’re reminded that many in Starfleet consider Burnham’s actions as the cause of the conflict with the Klingon Empire. She reacts by slamming someone’s face into a table in the mess hall. Quite right. It seems Lorca too has disagreements with superiors as he’s reminding someone who looks llike they probably outrank him that it’s his ship, therefore he will do things his way.
Lt. Saru (Doug Jones) says to Burnham, “You’re a valuable asset, but you’re dangerous” as we get a glimpse of her scanning something using a tricorder on a forest planet. We cut to the bridge of the Discovery as Lorca gives the command to raise shields and fire phasers. We hear the voice of a Klingon warrior accusing someone of wanting to destroy the Klingon Empire – and frankly after the earlier confrontation, who can blame Starfleet for still being sore?
Klang! Burnham is in a fight with a Klingon, dueling with a Bat’leth. And then, out of the blackness, we get our first look at Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) and he’s going off on one about the “little guys” who are “sick and tired of getting caught in your crossfire” and you know, this Harry Mudd looks like he means business, not like that pushover from TOS.
People get shot, people get smacked in the face, there’s tractor beams and explosions, phasers and photon torpedoes, tension, apprehension, drama, destruction…oh my God, it looks amazing!
Moreover, since MyM spoke with some of the VFX companies in Toronto that have worked on this, we’re reliably informed there will be no more unnecessary lens flare and weird camera angles from episode 3 onwards. Bonus.
Coincidentally, today – 28th September – is the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s premiere, Encounter at Far Point.
