Spark REVIEW

The biggest question raised by Spark is how did it land such an amazing voice cast? Patrick Stewart, Jessica Biel, Hilary Swank and – bonus points if you spot this before the end credits roll – Susan Sarandon (as elderly droid Bananny). The opening exposition from said robo-guardian sounds like the cut-scene intro to any standard RPG: benevolent king and queen; evil brother; kingdom destroyed and overthrown. It makes you wonder what they all saw in it?

In their defence, the premise should deliver thrills. Main character Spark (Jace Norman from TV’s Henry Danger) is the disaffected teen monkey who steals a spaceship and attempts to take his revenge on the evil Zhong (a cackling Alan C Peterson). His anthropomorphic adventure is aided by a pig, a fox and a bug, the CG animation team somehow managing to make a cockroach seem cute. Sadly, the intergalactic exploits misfire and the script – ironically – lacks spark.
