The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced that this year’s recipient of the Samurai Award will be Ryuichi Sakamoto.

The BAFTA and Oscar-winning musician, whose work includes Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and The Last Emperor, is the fourth winner of the award, which commends achievements by veteran filmmakers and creators who continue to produce groundbreaking work.

Sakamoto will be speaking at one of several free talks aimed at young film fans and next-generation filmmakers, as part of TIFF’s vision to engage with youth. Other speakers include the acclaimed filmmakers Brillante Ma Mendoza, Naomi Kawase and Fumihiko Sori.

The full line-up for this year’s festival, which celebrates its 30th birthday, will be announced at a press conference in Tokyo on 26 September 2017.

The 30th TIFF takes place from 25 October to 3 November at Roppongi Hills, EX Theater Roppongi and other theatres in Tokyo.
