The Disney Channel are in the early stages of developing a Hocus Pocus TV movie, as reported on Deadline. The new movie will be a reimagining, written by Scarlett Lacey (The Royals), with original producer David Kirschner serving as executive producer.

Mick Garris, co-writer on the original film revealed in a recent interview with Forbes that a script for a new Hocus Pocus film was in development for television. Kenny Ortega, the director of the original film, has since directed the High School Musical trilogy and Descendants movies for Disney. However, he will not be involved in the new film.

The original film featured Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as a trio of witches, the Sanderson sisters, executed in 1693 for their crimes in Salem, Massachusetts, only to be brought back to life 300 years later. Released in the US in the summer of 1993, it earned just $39.5 million at the US box office. Over the years regular TV screenings in the month of October have turned the film into a cult classic. Disney has even introduced the Hocus Pocus Villain Spectacular at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World.

There has always been talk of a sequel, with Midler, Najimy and Parker having expressed interest in reprising their roles. Though Deadline reports that the new film will feature a new cast.
