Blade Runner 2049 from Sony Pictures opens in UK cinemas on 6 October 2017 and the latest issue of MyM magazine sees director Denis Villeneuve and actor Ryan Gosling share their love of the sci-fi classic and their passion for the world’s most dangerous sequel.

“One of the biggest challenges of this movie was to figure out how this character will have evolved after 30 years. Where will he be? Where will his soul be? If he has a soul,” Villeneuve says teasingly. “And I was able to do that with Harrison, which made me feel secure because his level of commitment is huge.
“I was touched by how much he was engaged. It felt sometimes like this was his first movie because he was so passionate and full of ideas. Humble but open at the same time and a real perfectionist. It’s not very often you can work with someone who has that level of experience, a master in his own field, so I learned a lot from him about how to work with an actor.”
Gosling’s impression of his co-star actually began to form before Ford even showed up on set.
“When we first started shooting, Denis would say, ‘Let’s just imagine that Harrison is sitting in the corner watching this.’ So most of the time in my imagination he was there with his arms folded, shaking his head. So when he finally arrived it was such a relief, because he just rolled up his sleeves and got right to work. I felt like the movie finally began.
“He’s cooler than all of those characters he’s played, too. You realise that those iconic moments from those movies are things that he wrote or created. He’s a pretty inspiring guy. He walked a razor’s edge on this film in a really elegant way because he was being faithful and loyal to the original and also trying to make a separate film in his voice. I thought he did such an incredible job of that.”
