Studio Ghibli returns and starts production ‘in months’

We all knew Hayao Miyazaki wasn’t going to stay retired forever. He officially announced his departure back in 2013, having voiced concerns that it was too difficult to continue the long working hours animation production demands. However, he had often announced his retirements before, only to return and make a new movie – and that cycle is still ongoing.

Back in Issue 60 of MyM we reported that the anime master was hard at work on a new movie (as reported by producer Toshio Suzuki) having been spirited away for four years.

Since then, our review of the TV movie Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki also discussed a character “who knows no limits and who is not quite ready yet to step away from the world of anime”.

And while it’s still not known if his new project is a full-length version of Boro the Caterpillar, which was originally meant to be an animation short created for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, we do know that he’s staffing up Studio Ghibli once more to tackle the project. (Suzuki wouldn’t confirm that a feature length version of Boro was what Miyazaki was working on. “All I can say is that it’s really interesting,” he teased).

Empire now reports that Miyazaki brought together some of the main people involved in the film as part of a small ceremony in July, and started to recruit further staff later that same month.

Those artists are expected to start their training in October, with full production kicking off a few months after that.
