Inconceivable REVIEW

Nicolas Cage. Gina Gershon. Faye Dunaway. Inconceivable has a cast to make your mouth water. It’s just a shame their considerable collective talents are so wasted here.

A thriller in the vein of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (but sadly without the tension or campiness of that 1990s sick-chick-flick), this Jonathan Baker-directed film sees single mother Katie (Nicky Whelan) moving in with affluent doctors and fellow parents Brian (Cage) and Angela (Gershon) after their children become friendly. Angela is desperate for another baby, but is unable to carry her own egg to term. So she asks Katie to be her surrogate, little realising that her new nanny is not as innocent as she seems.

The script plays its hand too early, as Katie transforms from shy ingénue to swivel-eyed loon before we’ve even properly got to know who’s who. This consequent lack of tension coupled with scene after scene of awkward exposition, makes for arduous viewing.

Cage, meanwhile, pops up now and again to deliver a few soothing words to his increasingly troubled wife, while Dunaway furrows her brow a lot. Even a couple of decent twists towards the end can’t make this worthy of your time. Reviewed by Kate Lloyd
