A teaser for the upcoming Heathers reboot premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards. It wasn’t long before it appeared on the show’s official Instagram page.
Based on the cult black comedy from the 1980s, the original film was written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann. It focused on Veronica Sawyer, part of the popular all-girl clique at high school and her involvement during a spate of teen suicides.
The new rebooted series will be ten episodes and is set in the present day. It features Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, James Scully as J.D., Jasmine Mathews as Heather McNamara, Brendan Scannell playing a male Heather Duke who identifies as gender-queer, and Melanie Field as Heather Chandler. The series also stars Selma Blair and original cast member Shannen Doherty. The pilot is written by Jason A. Micallef and Leslye Headland. The footage released so far covers all the bases, with croquet, diary writing, suicide and vicious insults. The teaser features the Heathers walking (in slow motion, no less) to the sound of Phantogram’s Run Run Blood.
The rebooted TV series will air on the soon to be launched Paramount Network in early 2018
