After playing at Cannes earlier this year, Takashi Miike’s live-action adaptation of Blade of the Immortal was picked up by Magnet Releasing to distribute in the US. They’ve put together an exceptionally crazy subtitled trailer (with subtitles that couldn’t be any bigger).

Samurai Manji (Takuya Kimura) has taken many lives, both innocent and guilty. Cursed with immortality after a legendary battle, only after killing enough evil men can he regain his soul. Manji meets Rin (Hana Sugisaki), a young girl who asks for his help to avenge her parents who were killed by the Itto-Ryu, a group of master swordsmen led by ruthless warrior Anotsu (Sota Fukushi). Together they set off on a bloody quest to make right against those who did them wrong.

Based on Hiroaki Samura’s long running manga, it is Takashi Miike’s 100th feature film as a director. And being a red band trailer, there’s a bit of blood in it… even on the subtitles.

The film opened in Japan back in April and earned over ¥750 million ($6.8 million) at the Japanese box office.

Blade of the Immortal opens in the US on 3 November 2017 and in the UK via Arrow Films on 24 November 2017. If you can’t wait, it’s also screening at the London Film Festival this October.
