Writer and directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman could be the duo that bring Mega Man to the big screen.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox spent two years trying to acquire the rights to Capcom’s side-scrolling shooter and managed to close a deal earlier this year. They are now in “final negotiations” with Joost and Schulman to write and direct. The film is to be produced by Chernin Entertainment (having produced the recent Planet of the Apes franchise) and Masi Oka (of Heroes fame, and has also produced Netflix’s Death Note).

Capcom’s Mega Man first appeared on the NES in 1987. When Dr. Light’s colleague Dr. Wily reprograms six humanoid robots in an effort to take over the world, Light’s assistant, Rock, volunteers to become a fighting robot and defeat Wily. The unique aspect about the game being that after Mega Man defeats a robot boss, he gains their powers to help him shoot down enemies and other robot bosses. Mega Man has since seen numerous sequel and spin-off titles over the years, as well as making an appearance in Super Smash Bros. and the Marvel Vs Capcom franchise.

Joost and Schulman made their debut with the documentary Catfish. They went on to direct Paranormal Activity 3 and Paranormal Activity 4. More recently they directed Nerve, about an online game of truth or dare that goes wrong.
