First glimpse of Pacific Rim sequel’s new, giant robots

Pacific Rim did for giant robots what ET did for the BMX or Back to the Future did for skateboarding – it bought gigantic, piloted robots to mainstream cinemas. The last recorded attempt was in 1989, when director Stuart Gordon brought us the cult spectacular and vastly under-rated Robot Jox.

Naturally, for any sequel to be successful, it has be bigger and better…and in this particular instance, have even more gigantic robots, with even more cool sounding names. At Comic-Con in San Diego we finally caught a glimpse of what this awesome, action-packed pumping powerhouse of a sequel is going to offer.

Within the lore of Pacific Rim, most of the new Jaegers are “Mark VI” designs, the latest and greatest forms of the giant robots humanity built to tackle its steadily increasing Kaiju problem. Although the first movie dabbled with older [ahem] analogue Jaeger, Gipsy Danger was one of the earliest built, it seems like the new movie is giving us the slickest-looking robots humankind has to offer, which means they look much, much sleeker than the mechas of the first movie.

All new and improved Jaegars include Gipsy Avenger, Guardian Bravo, Titan Redeemer, Bracer Phoenix and Saber Athena. In addition to the new teaser trailer, a new website for the film also offers a few more details about the movie, including blueprints for the newly-revealed machines as well as some of their weapons, from giant morning stars to electric whips and plasma katanas. The site also confirms that Uprising is set 10 years after the events of the first movie.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is currently expected to hit theaters February 23, 2018.
