4K is the watchword for Microsoft’s “Project Scorpio” – now named Xbox One X following a briefing at video games show E3. The announcement was even broadcast for the first time in 4K UHD on Mixer, as if to underline that commitment.

Naturally, such a technology requires some fire power to make it work, and Microsoft is hailing the Xbox One X as “the world’s most powerful console”. There’s a price tag to match when it launches on 7 November 2017: Xbox One X will retail for £449 in the UK ($499 in the US).

Here’s the official tech blurb:
“Lose yourself in worlds built for immersive true 4K gaming, where action is brought to life with 2160p frame buffers. Enjoy brilliant graphic details in lights, shadows, and reflections with High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut. Experience premium audio that puts you in the centre of 3D spatial sound. Stream and record game clips in 4K at screaming-fast 60FPS. With 6 teraflops of processing power and 12GB GDDR5 graphic memory, Xbox One X is 40 per cent more powerful than any other console. Feel true power.”

And [engage drool shields] here’s a video to salivate over…

“Xbox empowers game developers large and small to create different types of games for every type of player,” said Phil Spencer, head of Xbox at Microsoft. “Not only do we have the biggest cross-platform blockbusters on our platform, we’ve also scoured the world to bring our fans unique content from creative artists that capture the imagination.”
