Phase IV of the MCU will lead off with the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel

As Infinity War edges ever closer we’re getting some idea of what Phase IV of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will look like. So much so in fact that we now know how Phase III will bow out and Phase IV will begin.

Kevin Feige has confirmed Avengers IV will be the end of Phase III. That makes sense, after all, that movie’s either going to be the end of the Infinity War or a two and a half hour farewell tour. We honestly suspect it’ll be both, especially considering the first movie of Phase IV is the Spider-Man sequel.

“So much happens in [the 3rd and 4th Avengers movies], as you can imagine, and so much is affected by it that we felt what better person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner, than Peter Parker?” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told io9. “So, coming out two months after Untitled Avengers, [that’s what] much of what the next Spider-Man film will be about.”

It makes a lot of sense, and it also neatly cements Pete as a default viewpoint character for Phase IV. That in itself is interesting given the weirdly quantum state of the Spider-Man movies. We know we’re getting a trilogy with Pete but there’s massive confusion about where the character goes after that. Are the Sony Spider-Verse movies also in the MCU? Right now it seems unlikely but regardless the character is serving not only as a viewpoint character but a bridge between the two universes. Poor Pete’s got a lot to do, but he’s up for the task and we’re looking forward to ushering in Phase IV with him.

Thanks to io9.
