As we wait with baited breath to find out if The Last Knight is good, or at least better than Age of Extinction, words reaches us about the first expansion of the Transformers movie universe.

Set to star everyone’s favorite walking post-modernist cut up, Bumblebee, the movie is the first one to emerge from the Transformers writer’s room put together a couple of years ago. It’s set to be directed by Travis Knight of Kubo and The Two Strings and stars Hailee Steinfeld who’s excellent. In everything. Seriously. Start at The Edge of Seventeen and Pitch Perfect 2.

Now, word reaches us about just how the movie is going to play out, thanks to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura;

‘I know we’re doing a spinoff first in the Bumblebee movie, and that is a very distinctive departure from what you’ve been seeing so far… The objective of that movie is to develop more time with less robots in a way, and to go back to 1985 and go back to sort of the original heritage if you would of the Transformers. So it has a very distinct idea in it, and then whatever is gonna happen with the chemistry is what’s gonna happen, but it really is a young female lead opposite Bumblebee.’

We are made of questions right now.

Is Bee going to be a yellow Volkswagen? GOD WE HOPE SO.

Is the movie going to have all the charm of the original with none of the interminable comedy interludes from Spike’s parents? GOD WE HOPE SO.

Is Steinfeld’s character going to show up in later present day movies or perhaps already has? GOD WE HOPE SO.

We’ll have to wait till next year to find out but early signs are good. In the meantime, the full interview’s over at Collider .
