Screenwriter, producer and Hollywood’s personal geek culture Sin Eater, Damon Lindelof is in talks to bring Watchmen to HBO. There’s no official offer yet but its clear both sides are interested.

Watchmen, written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons, s one of the most influential western graphic novels in history. The story of a group of retired superheroes brought together by the murder of one of their own it’s a multi-stranded piece that touches on multiple genres. There’s a mystery, a pair of love stories, the horror of the world’s only true superhuman and a discussion of whether humanity can be trusted to look after itself. It’s complex, difficult, involving stuff and the last time someone tried to bring it to the screen was Zack Snyder in 2009.

That film is, because it’s both a Snyder movie and horribly patchy, pretty universally derided but it did at least some things right. However, what ultimately killed it was the fact it was a movie and Watchmen, well, isn’t. This is a massive story and its basically impossible to drop it into 3.5 hours of movie.

This is where the HBO TV model comes in. Watchmen as a prestige 12 part series or a pair of seasons would give the show a chance to cover every element the book did. Aesthetically the show could present as Mad Men with a side order of American Gods and that’s some heady, fascinating territory.

Of course none of this is locked in yet, but it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. Who knows, Watchmen could become the next prestige series from a prestige graphic novel. But, for what it’s worth, we’d prefer it if something a little newer got the slot. And we’ll talk about that more later this week.

Thanks to THR for the initial report.
