Netflix have released a new full trailer for the upcoming live action Death Note adaptation and a new poster featuring shinigami Ryuk.

Based on Tsugumi Ohba’s phenomenal Japanese manga, teenager Light Turner (Nat Wolff) picks up a notebook which has the power to cause death to anyone whose name is written in it. Believing he can change the world, Light starts to write down the names of those he feels deserve to die. However, his actions attract the attention of the police and the famous detective L (Keith Stanfield).

Directed by Adam Wingard, he revealed that he was not going to tone things down with this adaptation, saying, “it’s got nudity, it’s got swearing, it’s got a ton of violence.”

The latest trailer hints at the violence with a massacre, and people dying by vehicles and a ladder. As well as iconic elements from the manga, such as apples and Kira worshippers, we also get to see and hear more of Ryuk, voiced by William Defoe. Click play below.

The film also stars Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton and Shia Whigham as Light’s father James.

Death Note arrives on Netflix on 25 August.
