Actor Powers Boothe, star of movies such as Southern Comfort and Sin City and TV series such as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and 24, has died. The 68-year-old first made his mark by playing cult leader Jim Jones in the TV miniseries Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (1980).

Boothe won the 1980 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Special for the role. However, to collect the award he famously had to cross a Screen Actors Guild picket line and he was the only nominated actor in any category to attend the awards ceremony. “This may be either the bravest moment of my career or the dumbest,’ he said at the time. He was later nominated for two SAG awards as a member of the cast of Nixon in 1996 and Deadwood in 2007.

Boothe went on to make a name for himself playing villains, including senator Roark in Sin City in 2005, Cy Tolliver in Deadwood and Gideon Malick in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (having first appeared in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers). He also played Lamar Wyatt – the father of main character Rayna James – on the musical drama Nashville and appeared in 24 as vice president Noah Daniels.

Boothe, who was born on a farm in Texas, passed away in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles early on Sunday 14 May 2017. He is survived by his wife Pam and their two children – the couple having been married for almost 50 years. A private service will be held in Texas.
