We really liked the ending of The Walking Deads seventh season and we like where the show’s going even more. As everyone involved prepares for all out war, Variety talked to producer Scott Gimple about the stakes, and what’s next. There’s some good stuff in there but this is the quote that jumped out at us:

“It’s essentially for the whole world as far as their experience,” Gimple told Variety. “It isn’t just their little corner. It’s the Kingdom and the Hilltop too. The Governor just wanted them dead. Negan would be happy if everyone was alive and well and working for him.”

That’s the best distillation of the war that we’ve read. It’s the difference between a world that can grow and a world that’s shackled and it all ties back to Negan’s line about how punishment is how he built everything. This is an ideological conflict, more nuanced and interesting than “good vs evil” and it should be a Hell of an engine for next season.

In the meantime, prequel show Fear The Walking Dead is back on 5 June. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more details.
