Life, in cinemas now, is great, squishy fun pitting a crew of ISS astronauts against a very tough, very smart Martian lifeform (see our review here). It’s also the latest script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Deadpool. They’ve been talking about Life, a possible sequel (spoilers abound for the ending of Life as a result) and, of, course Deadpool 2. Their Moviefone interview is particularly good fun and really very sweet. Here’s Reese talking about the reaction to Deadpool:

“It was probably the most gratifying moment of our careers. Because we’ve certainly reached big audiences but never a massive international audience like that, and the passion people had with it was so intense. We meet people all the time and the second you mention Deadpool they just light up. That, for us, is why we do it. There’s that line in Zombieland, when Woody Harrelson is gushing at Bill Murray and Bill says, ‘Well that’s why we do it.’ That’s what we say about Deadpool. It’s really fun.”

Over at The Hollywood Reporter they go into detail about Life and the challenge of making the battle on the ISS something close to a fair fight.

“We always wanted it to end in a creepy fashion that set up at least the possibility for future movies and but the script is very much a seesaw between Calvin having an advantage and the astronauts having an advantage. We always wanted them to be smart, but then a new problem present itself so when they got out of the frying pan they found themselves in the fire… It was very intentional and we just wanted to leave people with a real sense of goose bumps and anticipation of what might happen next.”

Reese and Wernick are great interviewees and there’s tons more in both interviews. Life is in cinemas now and is great fun.
