Airing in the UK on Sky 1, new episodes every Tuesday

Essential Plot Points:

  • Supergirl, Guardian and Winn are all working on the same case, but not together. Kara starts to get annoyed that the Guardian is helping out when she’s in a funk.
  • Alex and Maggie have started dating each other.
  • James and Kara argue about the Guardian and Supergirl’s importance as heroes, both wanting to have articles about them in the news.
  • A desperate mother who is looking for her missing daughter decides to go to CatCo to ask Kara and Snapper if they can help her find her girl.
  • Kara discovers more people have gone missing under similar circumstances.
  • Kara and Mon-El go undercover to the clinic that some missing teens visited only to be forcibly transported to another world through a kind of stargate.
  • Kara decides to investigate, and Mon-El follows but the portal closes, and there’s a red sun on this planet, so she’s lost her powers.
  • Kara and Mon-El surrender so that they can find out who is behind the kidnapping. It turns out to be Roulette who is taking part in human trafficking.
  • Kara and the other humans are sold, but Kara refuses to move so the other humans decide to fight and escape.
  • Alex and members of the DEO decide to go to the planet to save Kara, and Winn goes into the field for the first time.
  • During the fight the girl that Kara is searching for is taken away by the aliens. Alex uses a yellow sun grenade to give Kara back her powers so she can rescue the girl.
  • They all return home, thanks to Winn keeping the portal open.
  • After the events on Slave Moon, Mon-El decides he wants to be a superhero just like Kara.

Review:

Supergirl is back, and this time around she’s got some hard lessons to learn. Returning from its midseason break, it doesn’t take long for the series to get stuck back in. Feeling like she’s in a bit of a slump following Guardian’s introduction as a vigilante and his surge in popularity in the city, Kara wants to find a case that will bring back her mojo. It’s lucky, then, that fate decides to come knocking.

Fearful for her daughter’s safety, one mother decides to come to CatCo in the hope that they will be able to help shed some light on the teenager’s disappearance. Kara decides this is the case that’ll help her find her purpose again and makes it her mission to find the girl despite Snapper’s lack of encouragement. After getting some advice from Mon-El, the pair decide to investigate and end up on a planet where Kara’s powers are surpressed. It is here that Kara is put to the test, and must prove that Supergirl is more than just her powers as she tries to save the kidnapped teenagers.

Supergirl Lives was a good episode for Kara, letting her shine even as she is forced to face some difficult situations. This is particularly prevalent when she gives a rousing speech to the confined kids and persuades them to fight back against their kidnapers. While the speech wasn’t particularly novel, it still did the trick and Melissa Benoist continues to prove how impressive she is as the Girl Of Steel. Her adversaries in the episode weren’t as remarkable, though. The episode marked the return of Roulette, who had a chance for redemption after her poor introduction earlier in the season. In reality, it did nothing to add to her two-dimensional representation.

Kara and Mon-El’s friendship was another highlight of the episode. Whether it comes from their onscreen chemistry or their growing respect for one another, it is good to see the writers develop their relationship like this. Rather than have the – frankly – annoying excess of love interests for Kara they are able to move things in a more natural way between the pair. If they do decide to get the characters to fall in love with each other, this certainly works much better than any of the potential relationships thrown her way in the show’s first season. It’ll certainly be interesting to see what is in store for Mon-El in the future, and how much he actually knows about why he was saved.

Speaking of relationships, this was the first time that we got to see Alex and Maggie together as a couple. It is great to see Supergirl feature a homosexual relationship on screen like this, and it’ll certainly go a long way to help the LGBTQ community. Although Alex’s decision to break up with Maggie because Kara was in danger seemed unnecessary, there is hope that their storyline will continue to be one of the shows many strengths.

The Good:

  • Kara and Mon-El are doing quite well so far, the natural progression of their relationship from enemies to friends is definitely making their storyline endearing. If the writers do decide to make the two get together it’ll work much better than any of the would-be relationships from the first series.
  • Alex and Maggie’s relationship is good to see on screen, and will hopefully continue to grow stronger as the series goes on.
  • Winn and James’s bromance is quite fun this episode; while Winn suffers from a bit of a dip after fighting alongside Guardian his new role in the DEO could be very interesting to see develop.
  • “The cape can get heavy sometimes.”
    “I want a heavy cape.”

The Bad:

  • Why does Izzy’s mum go to CatCo to tell them about her missing daughter? They’re not the police.
  • Alex’s snap decision to break up with Maggie the minute something happens to Kara is a little odd.

And the Random:

  • Kevin Smith directed this week’s episode of Supergirl, and his daughter Harley Quinn -yes, she’s called Harley Quinn – is featured as the girl whom Kara saves.
