From the crafty to the geeky, we all have something we like to dabble in, which makes Ohh Deer the perfect companion for our readers. Whilst searching around YouTube for a collection of illustrators and quirky artists, I fell upon the Ohh Deer YouTube channel, which had a host of videos about artists they collaborate with and guides about quirky and unique gifts that are available in their store. Instantly I was interested in finding out more about the company, so contacted them to see if they could send me one of their Papergang subscription boxes to review.

Originally Ohh Deer was created by Jamie Mitchell as a way to make a living through illustrations after he took the big leap to leave his stable job. After a while of working with his co-founder Mark Callaby, the two picked a handful of illustrators they had been in contact with on Twitter and started creating uniquely quirky, one-off products. On a whole the team are scattered all over the world, but they have managed to collaborate as a group to complete projects for people and companies, such as Universal Music. Ohh Deer aims to bring quirky illustrated gifts, clothing and everything else in between and they support and pay all of their illustrators whilst promoting them to the fullest extent.

Papergang is Ohh Deer’s subscription box, which is the team’s way of expressing their deep rooted obsession with everything stationary and crafty. When you subscribe you will receive a box every month filled with a mixture of papery products and glorious stationary. The contents vary over time, but could include greeting cards, notebooks, desk accessories and art prints. There is a guarantee that you will never get a repeat box, as each month is carefully curated and designed with a specific artist and theme. Almost all of the products you receive will be exclusive to the Papergang box, then after a period of time the items will become available for purchase in the Ohh Deer store.

The box is £9.95 per month, but if you subscribe for longer periods you will be able to save even more money. For a three month subscription it is £29, six months is £56, and a 12 month (1 year) subscription is £109.95. There is a £1.95 charge for all UK deliveries and for any international subscribers you can find a breakdown on delivery costs here.

Included in the box for August was a golden washi tape, an A5 calendar postcard, an Aztec deer greeting card and two other postcards, which were promotional and information cards, but still had a really pretty design on the back.

The quality of the products are evident, and the card stock was nice and thick. The Aztec card design is colourful and really different from other cards I have seen. I really liked the idea that in each box you get the next month’s calendar card; once all are collected they can make a really pretty keepsake of the box.

An A4 hardback notebook was included in the box which totally took my breath away. I am an avid collector of notebooks and art supplies, so to me this item totally stole the show. Featuring the same marbled design as the paper sleeve that covered the box, the edges of the pages were gold, leaving a beautiful contrast to the pattern on the cover. The paper inside was of an extremely high quality, and allowed for sketches and drawings on the left hand side, with lined paper on the right. This was a complete surprise, managing to be totally beautiful and endearing at the same time, it is a very personal item.

The sleeve in which the Papergang box was inside had the same design as the notebook – a blue, pink and purple marble design with gold writing and instructions on how to make a paper Stegosaurus dinosaur in origami style. A simple design to create something cute and funky, but also as a sleeve it showed the aesthetics and theme of the box really well.

Included with my box was their latest brochure, and as you can see in the images above (click for larger version), their products are pretty unique. From dark humored Christmas cards, to those sad but true “nope” feelings put down into illustrations, the Ohh Deer team have thought of it all.

As a kleptomaniac of notebooks, sketchbooks and stationary, this subscription box is the perfect way to make sure I don’t splurge out on unnecessary items, but also a great way to stay relevant with the latest trends within the art world. The presentation of the items is possibly some of the best I have seen so far, and made me want to treat everything with absolute care.

Looking through their brochure allowed me to make notes and wishlists for others, and also gave me many ideas for presents to gift people. The customer service from the team is fun, lighthearted and truly helpful, which in turn reflects everything their brand is about. The quality of the products are of a truly high standard, and there is a sense that the boxes have been put together with respect and are curated towards their customers.

If you would like to check out Ohh Deer and their Papergang subscription box, then you can visit their website. Or if you would like more information about any of their products, then be sure to pop on over to their Facebook, Twitter, and InstagramA big thank you to the Ohh Deer team for allowing us to review their box, and we wish them all the best for the future.
