Two of the oddest movies to be released this year have had a very good week. Swiss Army Man and Hunt for the Wilderpeople aren’t exactly blockbusters but as Deadline reports, they’ve both had a very good opening weekend.

, directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert is the story of Hank (There Will Be Blood‘s Paul Dano), a shipwreck survivor who has given up hope of rescue. Until one day a corpse washes up on the beach and…well…here’s the trailer.

Yes that is Daniel Radcliffe playing a corpse. Yes it does look rather lovely and apparently America agrees. The film is showing in only three theaters before a nationwide release on July 1st but took $114,000 dollars in its opening weekend. Early word, from both audiences and the festival circuit that it showed on prior to this, is that it’s a really special movie. No word on a UK release date yet but we’ll keep an eye out.

also had a great opening weekend, taking $85,336 across five theaters before it’s nationwide release next week. It’s the latest film from Taika Waititi, writer and director of the magnificent What We Do In The Shadows and currently directing Thor: Ragnarok. Here’s the Wilderpeople trailer.

Again, no word on a UK release yet but anyone who’s seen Waititi’s previous work will know this is one to look out for.

So, two small, weird indie movies that look brilliant and are doing well. See? There is some good news!
