Issue 48 of MyM, the official magazine of MCM Comic Con, is out now! Featuring Dark Souls III, Emelie’s bad babysitter Sarah Bolger and a couple of big birthday celebrations for Transformers!

EDITOR’S LETTER
There’s always a little corner of MyM with an Asian twist but this issue we feel, as the song says, “we’re turning Japanese, we think we’re turning Japanese, we really think so!” Can you blame us? With Hidetaka Miyazaki back in charge of Dark Souls III, there’s never been a better time to jump on board this gaming franchise. We chat with the Japanese video game director (see page 25) about how the latest outing really drops the hammer and… oh, sorry, while you were reading this, YOU DIED.

Not a video game fan? Don’t worry, we also tracked down one of anime’s biggest names to ask him about his amazing animated feature Miss Hokusai (see page 46). Japanese director (you’re still spotting that theme, right?) Keiichi Hara talks about the unusual relationship between acclaimed artist Katsushika Hokusai and his equally talented daughter O-Ei, which is depicted in the film. Sticking with anime (see page 59), we also take the opportunity to wish Transformers: The Movie and Transformers: Beast Wars very happy birthdays – the former blowing out 30 candles, while the latter has 20 to extinguish.

Anime not your bag? If you prefer traditional film, we have a double treat for you. First off Japanese director Yuki Tanada discusses her provocative film The Cowards who look to the Sky and her love of imperfect characters. Then Nakajima Sadao – a director from, you guessed it, Japan! – shares a love of chambara sword fighting movies that has seen him create a documentary on the subject. All of which takes place before our resident Planet Japan expert Katie Carter (AKA capsulebunny) shows us a few of her favourite things (see page 30). Who wouldn’t love a store/art gallery that sells vintage Sailor Moon dolls and massive eight-scoop ice creams?

Too much Asian cuisine for one magazine? Surely not. But if you’re looking for something a little closer to home, we have all the best bits of MCM Midlands (see page 12) packaged into a neat little bundle – did your killer cosplay make the gallery? We also have our first sneak peek at the UK set of virtual reality gaming thriller The Call Up. Better show some love for this Birmingham production. With its theme of playing a video game that just might kill you, it won’t be long before it also gets a Japanese makeover and joins the likes of Sword Art Online and Btooom! in that region. Turning Japanese, indeed.
