Fox has recommissioned the Batman prequel series Gotham for a third season of convoluted origin stories for the comics’ deranged cast of villains and heroes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show stars Ben McKenzie as a younger version of James Gordon, as he struggles to become the upstanding police commissioner of his later years.

“It takes a very special team to tell the tales of Gotham,” says Fox Entertainment president David Madden. “For the past two seasons, [executive producers]Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon and John Stephens have masterfully honoured the mythology of Gotham and brought it to life with depth, emotion and memorable high drama. This incredibly talented cast has redefined these iconic characters for a new generation, and we couldn’t be more proud of this show.”

The news comes in the wake of the show receiving its lowest ratings of the season, just four million, but the show is very popular in time-shifted viewing with Fox claiming final consolidated figures of nine million.

Gotham airs on Channel 5 in the UK, where we are just about to enter the second half of season two, “Wrath Of The Villains” in a couple of weeks’ time, with the introduction of Mr Freeze and Hugo Strange into the mix.
