The Mario & Luigi series has been consistently enjoyable, and the latest outing, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros, thankfully doesn’t break that cycle.

When Luigi unleashes the Paper Mario universe upon the Mushroom Kingdom, he and Mario must set things right. Seeing paper-thin Koopas and Toads intermingling with regular Mario models is intriguing, and sets the stage for the rest of the game.

During gameplay, Mario and Luigi may be controlled independently to tackle environmental puzzles, though they can also join up for turn-based, timed combo battles. Paper Mario can make copies of himself, Battle Cards have special abilities, and amiibo support ensures the battle system is just as zany (if derivative) as it’s ever been.

It’s a breath of fresh air to interact with these characters and while we get plenty of Mario & Luigi action, sadly there isn’t as much of the Paper Mario world here as we’d have hoped for.

Yet while Paper Jam Bros doesn’t stray too far from the beaten path, it’s still a worthy addition to the series.
