Anime Limited plans 2D and 3D run in 15 cinemas…

Not content with bringing classic anime to Blu-ray, Glasgow-based Anime Limited has also acquired the theatrical rights to 009 RE:Cyborg. Kenji Kamiyama’s film adaptation of Shotaro Ishinomori’s classic manga will be released in approximately 15 cinemas in the UK and Republic of Ireland for a period of two weeks.

Anime Limited president Andrew Partridge confirmed that the film will be released in Japanese with English subtitles and will be available in both 2D and 3D this spring. No official date has been confirmed yet.

The film was supposed to have a surprise UK premiere in Glasgow on 10 February, but there was a problem with its delivery and it was replaced by Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters Per Second instead. Partridge revealed that Anime Limited’s release of Makoto Shinkai’s The Place Promised in Our Early Days (see above) is partly an apology for that last-minute substitution.

009 RE:Cyborg is set in 2013 when skyscrapers in London, Moscow, Berlin and New York are destroyed in simultaneous bombings. This act of terrorism by unknown attackers with unknown motives sets off a world-wide panic. A group of nine cyborg fighters, who had previously rescued humanity from similar threats, are brought back into action by their creator Dr Gilmore to find the group responsible and bring them to justice.
