New image for Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac proves that – as Pulp would say – This is hardcore…

The dirty mac brigade must have been rubbing their trousers excitedly at the thought of Lars von Trier’s next film. Title: Nymphomaniac. Audition process: rude. As star Shia LaBeouf (Transformers) revealed, “I sent the director videotapes of me and my girlfriend having sex and that’s how I got the job,” adding, “It’s not your typical film.”

That second phrase could be applied to most von Trier projects, given a back catalogue that includes Daily Mail trolling efforts such as Antichrist and avant garde Dogme95 projects. So when the first official image of Nymphomaniac was released, showing a fully clothed but unconscious Charlotte Gainsbourg (below), many wondered if this really was the kind of tentpole release they were expecting.

The plot sees self-diagnosed nympho Joe (Gainsbourg) found beaten in an alley by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård). As he tends to her wounds at his home she tells him the story of her erotic adventures. Had the the provocateur finally gone soft(core)?

Quick to pour cold water on such claims, the latest image lives up to the expectations von Trier’s title and storyline promise – with Gainsbourg appearing topless, sandwiched between two men. And unlike Liverpool’s Luis Suarez in an opponent’s penalty area, the action will be unsimulated.

“Lars wants to see the sexual arousement of a girl on screen,” says executive producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen, who confirms that the rough cut is currently seven-and-a-half hours long and will be split into two films. Separate hard and soft core versions will also be released.

“There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we’re doing it for real. Everything that is illegal, we’ll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening,” LeBoeuf confirms.

Nymphomaniac is in post-production and opens in US and UK cinemas in 2013.
